Camera Simulator

1.  The aperture settings available on this camera are 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22.

2. The shutter speed settings available on the simulator are all the way from 1 second to 1/4000.

3. The ISO settings available on the camera are 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400, 12800, and 25600.

ISO Cont.

1. The advantage of shooting at a higher ISO at a night football game is that you can have a good amount of light since your camera is more sensitive.

2. The author said you should always try to stick to the lowest ISO, like 100 or 200, and when there is enough light you should shoot in low ISO.

3. The author said you should only use high ISO when there is not enough light where you are, like if it's night time or it's a little dark.

ISO Pictures

ISO 200ISO 3200

Shutter Speed Cont.

1. Aperture Priority: when you shoot in this mode you set the lens aperture, and the camera sets the shutter speed, but the camera does this automatically.

2. Shutter Priority: when setting the camera to shutter priority, you manually set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture.

3. Manual: in this mode, you have to set both the aperture and the shutter speed.

Shutter Speed

This photo has high shutter speedThis photo has slow shutter speed

Aperture Cont.

1. We should closely relate aperture to pupils.

2. Finish this sentence- The smaller the Aperture the larger the f-stop, the higher the Aperture the smaller the f-stop.

3. Aperture affects depth of field because the smaller the aperture the more focused the foreground and background becomes. But when there is larger aperture, the background can be blurred out, and the foreground looks more in focus and sharper.

Peer Reflection

http://katescar.blogspot.com/

I like how well she framed the first picture, that was a very creative way to take the photo.
I also like in the second picture how she saw the diagonal lines coming from the chair and used them in the photo.
One thing she could fix is in her last picture, the water spouts are very distracting and take my attention away from the subject.

Academic Shoot Reflection and Critique

1. A challenge i came across was that i could not get a good enough angle to take better photos because there were things in the way. I also could not get much light and i didn't want to use the flash because when i did everyone was distracted by it.

2.  I was thinking mostly about focus, i kept moving the camera too fast so i had to stop and wait for the camera to focus.

3. If i could do the assignment again, i would go to a different classroom that had the lights on. I would also try and follow more rules of composition instead of just 1 or 2.

4. If I could do things the same, I would take the same type of pictures, a kid raising his hand, the teacher speaking, and then a class discussion.

5. I think the easiest rule to achieve will the rule of thirds. Along the rule of lines.

6. I think the hardest rule to accomplish will be the rule of balance, i don't understand that rule very well. But simplicity could also get hard because classrooms always have a lot of things in the way of your photo.

7. I am still not very clear about the rule of balance,  you can tell in my pictures that i don't have much balance.

Academic Photos

1. I followed the rule of thirds while taking this photo.
2. The subject is the teacher, and he is speaking to the class while leaning on a podium.
3. It is clear what the subject is.
4. If you could not tell what the subject then I could've blurred out the background to make it more obvious.

1. I followed the rule of thirds again, but i think i also may have followed the rule of lines, because of the lines on the windows.
2. The subject is the boy raising his hand while in a class discussion.
3. I think it is very clear what the subject is.
4. If it is unclear what the subject is than I should've added more light to the photo.
1. I followed the rule of thirds again and maybe the rule of balance because the red poster and the map balance the picture.
2. The subject is the map on the chalkboard, there is a poster in the background but that is not the subject.
3. It is clear what the subject is.
4. If it is not clear what the subject is then i could've taken the picture without the red poster in the background.

Most Unethical and Ethical Manipulation

I think this photo is the least unethical because nothing was significantly changed about the photo. A title was added to the picture and i think that is not crossing the line on editing.

I think this photograph is definitely too much editing. The photo is almost completely changed, the background is the same but the person has changed. The photo is no longer displaying the 'truth' and now says something else, I would say this much editing is crossing the line of ethical editing.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

A. Making sure media mangers do not change the photo too much to when it's not portraying the 'truth' anymore. Also doctoring images has been around for as long as the camera was invented.

B. Washington Post: has very strict guidelines on how to shoot and edit their photos.
New York Times: also has very strict rules on editing photos, photojournalists have to turn in all of their proofs and also their final portfolio in order for the photo to be used.

C.  I think when editing a photo you could change the brightness and it would be okay. I also think you could change the background if it's just a solid color not trees or things that make the photo more important and display the 'truth' better.

Great Black and White Photographers PART2

Ansel Adams was born on February 20, 1920 in San Fransisco, California. When he was four an aftershock of an earthquake that happened in 1906 threw him to the ground and he badly broke his nose, it scarred him for life. A year after this, his family went broke, and Charles Adams, his father, spent the rest of his life trying to get them back to wealth. Adams had no brothers or sisters, and was born when his mother was forty. He went to Harvard University, and after that he went to Yale. After he graduated he kept taking pictures and won many awards, a lot of photos he took were put on calendars, posters, books, and all over the internet. He won the Hasselblad Award in 1981, this award is given to photographers who are recognized for their great achievements. He had many quotes, one of them was "you don't take a photograph, you make it". Ansel Adams died on April 22, 1984 in Monterrey, California.

2012 Winners Photo

I chose this photo because it shows a police officer comforting a football player who just barely lost a game based on the scoreboard. I don't think that's something you would ever see so I chose this photo because it's a rare thing to see.

This photo follows the rule of thirds, it does not have simplicity because the distracting scoreboard in the background. But I would say it has balance, because the player and the officer balance each other out. It does have a line in the foreground leading up to the two people.

Filling the Frame

This photo is very interesting, it looks like these boys planned to wear shades as a funny way of graduating high school. They were all probably friends throughout high school and now want to do one last funny thing together.

The Story

This picture shows a story because judging on how happy she is to be graduating she either has great things coming, or is just very glad to be done with high school.

Action and Emotion

I think this photo has the best emotion, the girl on the right is shocked at what is happening in the experiment they are doing. The girl on the left seems a little scared because it looks like she backed up.

Post Shoot Reflection

What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos of your first 4 prompts (Square, Metal, Happy, Bowie)

1. I encountered many problems, in one of my pictures the sun was in the way of the picture and i had to move the camera to an angle where the sun wouldn't be in the way. Also it was hard to find a good picture of happy, i had to settle for an okay picture of a statue smiling.

What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.

2. While i was taking pictures i was constantly thinking about rule of thirds. in all of my pictures i tried to put the picture in the corner and made sure it wasn't in the middle. When i took a picture for metal i put the metal chain in the bottom corner of the picture.

If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?

3. If i could do the assignment differently then i would take a different picture for bowie. The picture i had for bowie was poorly taken and was too bright and didn't follow rule of thirds or any composition rules. The picture i would take instead would be of the bowie sign in front of the school.

What things would you do the same?

4. I would take the same picture for metal and i would also take the same picture for square. My pictures for square and metal were well taken and were good ideas.

Finally - go back and edit your blogs with the 4 photos (square, metal, happy, Bowie), tell me what rules of composition (which you just learned about) did you end up actually achieving? Did you have any?

5. In my picture with the chain on the bench i followed the composition rule, rule of thirds. I also did rule of thirds on my picture of the square, and on my picture of happy. I would say i sort of followed the composition rule for lines, on my metal photo there is a ling leading up to the metal. on my picture for bowie i failed to follow most of the composition rules, although i think i might of included lines into my photo.

Are you interested in shooting those same prompts again, why?

6. I am interested in shooting those same prompts again because i saw a lot of other better pictures i could have taken. There is a lot of photos i could take for bowie and for square. Not many for happy but i could find something for it. And there are plenty of things i could take photos of that would relate to metal.

Student Blog Reflection

I like how the picture for happy is people hanging out having a good time instead of someone smiling. I also think the picture for bowie is very good and shows bowie pride. One thing they could fix is when taking a picture of metal they could get closer up to the metal, because in the picture it is hard to tell what they are taking a photo of.

Avoiding Mergers

I chose this picture because it shows border mergers. In the right side of the picture all you can see is the arm and hand, the rest of him is cut off. the firefighter is also cut off, you cant see his legs or his hands. And on the left side of the page you can only see what looks like an arm.

Balance

I chose this picture for balance because the twin towers are balanced out with the bridge, they towers are one side and the bridge is on the other side.

Rule of Thirds

I chose this picture for the rule of thirds because the photographer placed the firemen on the left side of the picture instead of the middle. The last firefighter of the left is almost in the middle but not quite. This photo follows the rule of thirds.

Simplicity

I chose this picture because it shows simplicity, the woman covered in what looks like ash or dust is the only thing that is clearly visible in the picture. You can sort of see a door and the wall and floor, but it is clear that the main focus of the photo is the woman with no distracting backgrounds.

Framing

This picture obviously shows framing because the wall with a huge hole in it acts as a frame for the firefighter climbing up the ladder. The wall made a frame and when u look through it, you see what the photographer wants you to look at.

Lines

This picture shows lines because it has a lot of lines going down the building. This picture could also be simplicity because of the simple background.
